Summa L-Series Laser Cutters

Summa logo Authorized Summa Dealer

The Summa L-Series is a line of industrial laser cutters built for textiles, soft signage, and technical fabrics. Built on 25+ years of laser cutting expertise, these machines deliver what knife cutters can't: perfectly sealed edges without fraying, contactless cutting that won't distort stretchy materials, and production speeds that actually keep pace with your printer.

Best for: Soft signage producers, sportswear manufacturers, and technical textile fabricators who need sealed edges and high-volume throughput.

Two Models, Two Production Profiles

The L-Series includes two machines built for different scale and application needs:

L1810 - Textile & Sportswear Production

A compact laser cutter sized for sportswear, dye-sublimation garments, and technical textiles. A working width of 71.7" handles most roll-fed fabric applications. Available in four laser power configurations (50W to 250W) so you can match capability to production volume. The smaller footprint fits into existing production areas without major floor plan changes.

Best for: Sportswear manufacturers, dye-sub garment producers, composite material fabricators, technical textile operations.

L3214 - Wide-Format Soft Signage

The L3214 is Summa's high-production laser cutter for soft signage at scale. 129.9" working width handles the widest roll-fed banners and SEG graphics (Silicone Edge Graphics, fabric prints with sewn-in silicone strips that snap into frames). Standard Vision camera system enables Cut-on-the-Fly processing (scanning and cutting simultaneously), hitting 400 square meters per hour on typical jobs. When deadline pressure meets large-format soft signage, this is the machine.

Best for: Soft signage producers, trade show graphics, SEG frame production, high-volume banner and flag manufacturing.

Why Laser Cutting for Textiles?

Knife-based cutting technology struggles to match modern print speeds. The mechanical up/down motion limits throughput, tool changes add setup time, and blade contact can distort stretchy or delicate fabrics.

Laser cutting changes the equation:

  • Sealed edges without fraying - The laser beam fuses fabric edges as it cuts, eliminating the loose threads that complicate sewing and finishing. Cuts are ready for the next production step immediately.
  • No fabric distortion - Contactless cutting means no drag or pressure on the material. Stretchy fabrics like lycra, spandex, and elastane cut cleanly without deformation.
  • Intricate designs at speed - Complex contours that would slow a blade cutter don't affect laser cutting speed. Detailed patterns cut as fast as simple shapes.
  • No tool wear or replacement - No blades to dull, sharpen, or replace. Consistent cut quality job after job.
  • Lower labor costs - Automation cuts down on operator intervention. The machine does more, so your team can manage instead of operate.

L-Series Technology

Class 1 Safety Classification

Both L-Series machines meet Class 1 laser safety standards (the safest classification, meaning no special precautions required during normal operation). The cutting area is fully enclosed during operation, with mechanical interlocks that pause the laser when covers are opened. Fumes vent through internal extraction systems, not into your workspace.

Vision Camera System

High-resolution camera technology that scans printed materials and automatically aligns cutting paths. Handles registration marks, detects print shrinkage and distortion, and enables advanced workflows like Trace & Cut (automatic contour detection without pre-made cut files). Standard on L3214; optional upgrade for L1810.

Cut-on-the-Fly Processing

Cut-on-the-Fly is the productivity feature that separates Summa L-Series laser cutters from conventional systems. Instead of scan-then-cut sequencing, the machine scans the next section while cutting the current one. Feed, scan, and cut happen simultaneously. On the L3214, this workflow is the default operating mode.

Cut-to-Frame for SEG Graphics

Silicone Edge Graphics need precise sizing to fit frames correctly. The Vision system detects any shrinkage or distortion from printing and calendering (heat and pressure finishing), then adjusts the cut path so the finished piece fits the intended frame size exactly. No trial-and-error, no waste panels.

GoProduce Laser Edition Software

Summa's production software manages job queuing, material settings, and workflow automation. Includes material presets, job logging, and waste-cut functionality. Optional Pro Pack adds barcode-driven automation and hot folder support for integration with existing workflows. We'll help you configure material presets and workflow automation during installation.

Quick Answers

What is the Summa L-Series?

The L-Series is Summa's line of industrial laser cutters designed specifically for fabrics, textiles, and soft signage materials. Unlike knife-based cutting systems, laser cutting uses a focused beam to cut and seal edges simultaneously—eliminating fraying and reducing post-processing. L-Series lasers are used across fast fashion, sportswear production, soft signage manufacturing, technical textiles, and interior decoration.

What are the different L-Series models?

The L-Series includes two models: the L1810 textile laser cutter, optimized for sportswear and dye sublimation work with a compact footprint and configurable laser power options; and the L3214 wide-format laser, built for high-volume soft signage production with standard Cut-on-the-Fly capability and throughput up to 400 m²/hour.

What materials can L-Series lasers cut?

L-Series lasers excel at cutting polyester fabrics, stretchable materials (lycra, spandex, elastane), felt, cotton, technical textiles, filtration materials, banners, canvas, and composite materials. The contactless cutting process makes them ideal for sensitive and easily distorted fabrics that would shift under knife pressure.

Why laser cutting instead of knife cutting?

Knife-cutting technology requires the blade to physically contact material, which can cause distortion on soft fabrics and requires blade changes over time. Laser cutting is contactless—no fabric distortion, no blade wear, and significantly faster throughput on intricate designs. Edges are sealed as they're cut, eliminating fraying and reducing labor costs for finishing work.

Applications by Industry

Soft Signage & Display

Trade show graphics, backlit displays, retail décor, SEG frames, flags, non-PVC banners. The L3214's wide format and Cut-on-the-Fly capability make it the production choice for high-volume soft signage operations.

Sportswear & Apparel

Dye-sublimation prints, athletic wear, fashion textiles. Sealed edges simplify sewing and eliminate fraying. The L1810's working width handles standard garment panel sizes efficiently.

Technical Textiles

Airbags, seatbelts, filtration media, medical mesh. When precision is non-negotiable and edge quality affects product performance, laser cutting delivers what blade systems can't match.

Interior Decoration

Pillow covers, upholstery, rugs, textured wall art. Custom designs and one-off pieces cut as efficiently as production runs.

Composite Materials

Raw materials for aerospace, automotive, and marine applications. The L1810 handles composite layups that would challenge conventional cutting methods.
