Direct OEM replacement

The K172R matches the Esko BLD-SR8172 and Gerber G42460402 / 42460402 in form, fit, and geometry. Same 8mm round stock, same 50-degree single edge, same holder. Order it and drop it in.

What is through cutting?

Through cutting means the blade cuts completely through all layers of the material, including any backing or liner. The cut piece separates fully from the sheet. This blade is designed for through-cut work. It is not a kiss-cut blade.

Fine grain tungsten carbide

The K172R is ground from fine grain tungsten carbide. In a production drag blade, this matters. Finer grain means a sharper edge geometry, better edge retention on abrasive materials like polycarbonate and 3M VHB, and fewer blade changes before cut quality starts to slip.

Common questions

How do I know this fits my machine?

If your machine takes the Esko BLD-SR8172, Gerber G42460402, or 42460402, the K172R is a direct drop-in. Not sure? Contact us before you order. We will confirm the fit.

What materials does it cut?

The K172R is rated for self adhesive vinyl, polycarbonate, polyester, masking film, window prep vinyl, magnetic media, transfer paper, and 3M VHB. If you are running thicker or layered materials at the upper end of its depth range, dial in your parameters before committing to a full job run.

Why is this blade rated for materials as different as vinyl and polycarbonate?

The 50-degree single edge geometry handles a wide range of through-cut applications on Esko and Gerber systems. Flexible films, rigid sheets, heavy adhesives -- it is the same cut action, just different pressure and speed settings. If you are unsure whether your material and machine settings are dialed in correctly, reach out before you run it.

How do I know when to replace it?

Watch your cut quality. If the blade is dragging or tearing instead of cutting cleanly, or material is not releasing from the sheet as expected, it is time to swap. Do not wait for a complete failure. A worn blade stresses your holder more than a fresh one does.

Getting the most from your cutting table

A fresh blade is a good start. But if you are going through blades faster than expected, or cut quality has become inconsistent, the blade is rarely the whole story. Cut depth, speed, pressure, and machine condition all affect how long a blade lasts and how clean it cuts.

It is worth asking: When was your machine last serviced? Are your parameters dialed in for this material? Is this the right blade geometry for what you are cutting? Could your operators use time with someone who runs these machines every day?

Flatbed Tools offers machine service, preventive maintenance, operator training, and workflow consulting. If something is not cutting right, reach out. We have probably seen it before.
